A Beginner’s Guide to the Best Perfume Types

Whenever we’re trying to shop for fragrances, don’t you just get a bit confused with all the terms pertaining to these scents?

There are words like parfum, eau de parfum, eau de toilette, and more.

The main question is this: what do these terms mean, and what are their differences?

In this blog post, we will tackle the beginner’s guide to the best perfume types. In layman’s terms, we’re finally going to uncover what these terms mean.

What is Parfum?

When it comes to parfums, this is something that you’re probably always going to come across in a store. It’s also known as Extrait de Parfum, and this is the one that costs the most out of everything else.

The main reason it costs so much is because of the ratios in which the fragrances have been mixed. If you don’t know, parfum is concocted using 15% to 40% of its fragrance content. This means that when it’s applied, the scent will last from 6 to 8 hours.

What is Eau de Parfum?

When it comes to the concentration of fragrance, eau de parfum always comes second.

Most eau de parfums have a 15% to 20% fragrance percentage, but the remaining is taken up by alcohol. Once applied, its scent will also last from 6 to 8 hours, but it isn’t as strong as parfums.

Normally, most people use eau de parfums during the night since it has a bit of a mellower scent, and it can last very long without any need to re-apply.

What is Eau de Toilette?

The term eau de toilette is developed from the French phrase, “faire sa toilette,” which means “to groom yourself.”

From the name itself, you might be able to notice that this is a fragrance used after you take a shower. So most people use an eau de toilette that has a more personal smell as they use it right after the shower.

Most eau de toilette has a fragrance range of 5% to 15%, and they usually last from 1 to 3 hours.

What is Eau de Cologne?

When it comes to fragrances, eau de cologne is probably the most misused phrase.

Many people will use the word “cologne” to describe a premium type of fragrance – but this isn’t the case. In reality, cologne is a mild fragrance easy on people with sensitive noses.

Normally, eau de cologne has a 2% to 4% concentration, so it’s normally pretty tame to the senses.

What is Eau Fraiche?

Lastly, eau fraiche is actually the mildest overall.

Still, it’s a great option for those who dislike a stronger scent.

Normally, eau fraiche has a 1% to 3% concentration, and its scent will be noticeable from 1 to 3 hours after application.
